I don’t put much stock in discussions about signs of the zodiac or other superstitious topics. Still, I’ve always believed in the idea that the appropriate birthstone can take a woman’s jewelry to the next level. In my case, the month is December and the stone is turquoise. Coincidentally or not, turquoise is my favorite color, and my boyfriend knows that a necklace or bracelet bearing those blue-green stones is a can’t-miss gift.
Over the years, I’ve collected turquoise rings in various states of luster and quality. The finest specimens I’ve seen were mined in Iran, but the stones from the American Southwest come in at a close second. Indians once believed that turquoise held mystical protective powers that would serve them well in battle; for me, the stone holds the promise of a fun, flashy night on the town.
If you’re looking for an understated way to wear Native American jewelry, look for a ring that suits your personality and personal style. You can find handcrafted rings featuring amethyst, white opal, onyx, malachite, lapis, azurite, turquoise and other stones set in sterling silver or gold, giving you endless options for a unique look. Turquoise is perhaps the most distinctive gem that’s associated with Native American jewelry, and its blue-green hue looks great with sterling silver. In the fifteenth century, the Pueblo Indian tribes of the American southwest began making turquoise and silver rings with the arrival of the Spanish to the New World. The Spanish taught Natives how to work with silver and they became proficient silversmiths.
If you choose a turquoise ring from the wide selection of Native American rings available, make sure to take special care of it. Turquoise is very sensitive to solvents, so perfume, jewelry cleaners, cosmetics and skin oils can attack the finish and alter the color of the gem. Direct sunlight can also discolor turquoise, so don’t wear your turquoise ring to the beach or another place where you’ll be in the sun. To clean your ring, wipe the turquoise gently with a soft cloth and store it in its own container to avoid it being scratched by harder gems.
Before you clean, know your metal. In the U.S. today, there are three basic metal alloys known as “silver.”: sterling silver, German silver and silver plate. You don’t clean all of them the same way. In fact, one needs virtually no cleaning.
Silver is used frequently on tack and jewelry, items you really want to shine in the show ring or to just show off. To keep yours brilliant, here’s a brief rundown on the composition of silver alloys and how to clean them.
(Sterling silver) is actually a government standard. To earn the designation “sterling,” the metal must contain at least 92.5 percent silver. It tarnishes over time, requiring a regular polish to restore its luster.
German silver is a trade name and a term that came into use years ago among German silversmiths for their nickel alloys. Also called nickel silver, it’s the most inexpensive metal of the three types and tarnishes more quickly than sterling.
Silver plate 99.9 percent pure silver, coated or “plated” over a base metal, that may be copper, brass or bronze, depending on the how the silversmith plans to use it. To prevent tarnish, many silversmiths then plate the silver with another substance, such as a lacquer. Despite this final outer coating, most lacquer will yellow over time. One company, Montana Silversmiths, found a way to prevent the yellowing. Using a patented procedure and material, company silversmiths plate their silver with “Montana armor,” a substance the company claims is about 64 times more wear resistant than lacquer. In fact, it’s so durable, the company warrants its silver plate for life. It’s used on tack and jewelry for an exclusive number of companies.
Native American Jewelery is one of the most well know examples of silver jewelery
Turquoise is a jewel that when worn is believed to bring the wearer a feeling of attachment to their family and a feeling of unconditional love. But it is not turquoise on its own that is able to do this; turquoise is a greenish blue stone while the black lines that are found within it is called sard.
Sard by itself brings one a feeling of attachment to their family, home and their roots. While turquoise by itself brings the feeling of uncondtional love. The turquoise is believed to help a person pull the negative energy out of their body which is why many people are encouraged to wear it.
When you see someone wearing a nice piece of jewelry, you don’t normally think about where it comes from. Malachite is a beautiful green stone that often results from the weathering of copper ores and is found together with azurite, goethite and calcite. The properties of malachite are similar to those of azurite and aggregates of the two minerals are often found together.
So next time you see some malachite rings in the jewelry store you can tell the person you’re with all about its makeup. Most of the malachite that you see has been mined in the Ural Mountains. The mineral has been mined and used for jewelry and other items for more than 3,000 years.
Rings are round bands worn around the finger as a type of ornamental jewelry. Rings can be made of metal, plastic, wood, bone, glass and gemstones. Gemstones can be set on the ring to make it as beautiful and elegant as it can be. They can be precious or semi-precious. An example of a semi-precious stone is the lapis lazuli.
The lapis lazuli was first mined in a province in Afghanistan. Later traded on to neighboring countries that is why it can be acquired anywhere now. It has an intense blue color with small flecks of golden pyrite. Lapis rings are often worn as in the olden days, they were believed to be a powerful aphrodisiac. They were also believed to keep the limbs healthy and free the soul from sin, envy and fear.
“Wear this ring as a sign of my love and loyalty…” We hear this line very often when we attend weddings as this mean binding two people who are very much in love and are willing to be together ‘til death do they part. Rings are ornaments worn on a finger by both men and women and can be of any quality. Some people prefer wearing just silver or gold and can be studded with any kind of gemstone. While some prefer to dress their fingers gaudily with just about any kind of accessory or semi-precious stones. Gems are also often used as rings as well.
Gems can be a precious or semi-precious stone and can be very attractive specially once they are cut. They come in different colors and can be clear or opaque. A turquoise ring is an example of an opaque gem. It was termed as an ornamental stone through the years due to its unique color. It is a bluish green stone which can have a pale bluish white streak. Despite its low hardness compared to other gems, it has a waxy luster and can take a good polish.
