December’s Birthstone and So Much More

I don’t put much stock in discussions about signs of the zodiac or other superstitious topics. Still, I’ve always believed in the idea that the appropriate birthstone can take a woman’s jewelry to the next level. In my case, the month is December and the stone is turquoise. Coincidentally or not, turquoise is my favorite color, and my boyfriend knows that a necklace or bracelet bearing those blue-green stones is a can’t-miss gift.

Over the years, I’ve collected turquoise rings in various states of luster and quality. The finest specimens I’ve seen were mined in Iran, but the stones from the American Southwest come in at a close second. Indians once believed that turquoise held mystical protective powers that would serve them well in battle; for me, the stone holds the promise of a fun, flashy night on the town.

Navajo Turquoise More than a Jewel

Turquoise is a jewel that when worn is believed to bring the wearer a feeling of attachment to their family and a feeling of unconditional love.  But it is not turquoise on its own that is able to do this; turquoise is a greenish blue stone while the black lines that are found within it is called sard.

Sard by itself brings one a feeling of attachment to their family, home and their roots. While turquoise by itself brings the feeling of uncondtional love.   The turquoise is believed to help a person pull the negative energy out of their body which is why many people are encouraged to wear it.

Till Death Do Us Part …

“Wear this ring as a sign of my love and loyalty…”  We hear this line very often when we attend weddings as this mean binding two people who are very much in love and are willing to be together ‘til death do they part.  Rings are ornaments worn on a finger by both men and women and can be of any quality.  Some people prefer wearing just silver or gold and can be studded with any kind of gemstone.  While some prefer to dress their fingers gaudily with just about any kind of accessory or semi-precious stones.  Gems are also often used as rings as well.

Gems can be a precious or semi-precious stone and can be very attractive specially once they are cut.  They come in different colors and can be clear or opaque. A turquoise ring is an example of an opaque gem.  It was termed as an ornamental stone through the years due to its unique color.  It is a bluish green stone which can have a pale bluish white streak.  Despite its low hardness compared to other gems, it has a waxy luster and can take a good polish.
